Originating out of necessity in the late 1700s and early 1800s, the British needed to get beer to their troops in India. The beer was going off on the long shipping routes so to preserve the beer better. The brewers lifted the alcohol content, added more hops as the hops have an anti-bacterial preservative quality with the intention of diluting it once it arrived in India. But the troops would have none of that and insisted on the concentrated pale ale and the style was born.
The Americans evolved the style further with their citrusy hops and this beer was created
AMERICAN INDIA PALE ALE
Medium gold to reddish amber. May be hazy due to dry hop polyphenols binding with proteins.
An intense hop aroma,
Citrus, pine, resinous, spicy tropical fruit aroma. High fruitiness from the yeast. Low malt aroma, spicy herbal in character, sweet malt aroma, with a slight sulphur note due to the high levels of sulphates in the water.
High hop flavours are present citrus pine grapefruit, tropical fruit flavours. Some light caramel flavours. Low residual sweetness balancing with the high bitterness.
The bitterness and hop flavour linger into the after taste but are not harsh, there is alight but clean alcohol flavour.
Smooth texture with slight astringency, medium carbonation.
Pale malt + caramel malts, carra-aroma, carra red carra amber.
American hops and American ale yeast.
